Just as his latest big-budget marvel is about to invade US theaters, Jerry Bruckheimer has coaxed his home team Disney to cough up a reported seven figure check (against $3.5 million) for Terry Rossio and Bill Marsilii’s epic space adventure Lightspeed, says Variety.
The scribes had previously teamed on the thriller Deja Vu, which marked the highest spec sale ever when Disney and Bruckheimer paid mid-seven figures for the script in 2004. The story of their latest collaboration centers on a young pilot who makes the Earth Interstellar Racing Team and must take his ship on a perilous journey across the galaxy on the brink of war. Bruckheimer envisions the project as a live-action and potentially 3D pic.
While the news of the sale itself is remarkable (selling pitches in Tinsel Town without attached talent is very rare in today’s marketplace), the creative team involved is no shocker. Rossio co-wrote (along with Ted Elliot) all three of Bruckheimer/Disney’s Pirates of the Caribbean films and also worked on their National Treasure franchise. In addition, Rossio wrote the 1994 classic Aladdin, making him one of the Magic Kingdom’s most trusted scribes.
