Chris Pine is returning to the USS Enterprise before he becomes Jack Ryan. That is, if he becomes Jack Ryan at all. According to Deadline, the tentative plan to bring Jack Ryan to life with Chris Pine in the role has been delayed because of issues with the script, so Paramount will push for Pine in Star Trek 2 first, even though JJ Abrams hasn’t officially returned to direct.
Here’s the short version of the script issues: Steve Zaillian, the original writer of the 1994 Ryan film Clear and Danger, planned to write the script but dropped out in the past two weeks. Screenwriters Hossein Armini, Adam Dozad and Anthony Peckham are all working on it now, but it keeps getting tossed around the studio so much that it sounds like everyone, from writers to janitors, is throwing their opinion into the pile.
Basically, none of this really matters because the whole Jack Ryan thing is apparently one big clusterfuck. So, forget all of it and just take joy that Star Trek 2 will probably be out when it’s supposed to be: June 29, 2012.
