Disney has been stuck in a bit of a bubble, with their new movies feeling like they were only live-action remakes, computer remakes, or sequels. At one of the latest D23’s, Disney execs said they were going to change that. First is Soul, releasing in December, and now we have our first Tease at ‘Raya and the Last Dragon‘.
The film follows Raya (Kelly Marie Tran) and her armadillo named Tuk-Tuk (Of course there had to be a cute little animal that kids will want the stuffed animal of, its Disney). Raya has trained to be a guardian of the “Dragon Gem”, but is now on a quest to find the last dragon to unite the people, and has to fight a mysterious figure. That’s basically all this teaser is, since it is, a tease. We can also assume at some point time passes because later in the teaser all of a sudden small Tuk-Tuk is HUGE.
I for one am excited. It’s an original Disney story, it looks great, and Raya feels like a bad-ass kind of like Mera from Brave. I’m also all for the inclusion of South East Asians.
Again, this is just a tease, but at least it’s promising.
‘Raya and the Last Dragon’ will be in theaters (yay) in March 2021.
