To say Eddie Redmayne isn’t struggling for work is an understatement. The actor won an Academy Award and is starring in JK Rowling’s Fantastic Beasts And Where To Find Them, but there was a time many years ago when he wasn’t such a coveted actor. Back when he was a university student trying to break into acting, he auditioned for role in the Harry Potter series and didn’t even get a callback.

In a recent interview with Empire OnlineRedmayne admitted that he tried out for the part of Tom Riddle in Harry Potter And The Chamber Of Secrets, but didn’t come close to getting the part.

“I actually auditioned to play Tom Riddle when I was back at university. I properly failed and didn’t get a call back. Over the years, I always hoped I might be cast as a member of the Weasley family, but unfortunately not,” he said.

Redmanye seems like a natural fit for a Weasley brother, but everything works out for a reason. If he landed the job as Tom Riddle, he may have never picked up a role in Steven Hawking’s The Theory Of Everything which landed him an Oscar. If there’s anything Redmayne’s story tells us, it’s that dreams really do come true if you don’t give up. He may have not scored a role in any of the Harry Potter films, but he did make it to the Wizarding World eventually, with a bigger part than Tom Riddle and some fancy awards in his back pocket .

Fantastic Beasts And Where To Find Them hits theaters on November 18th.
