Exclusive Interview With Robert Pattinson

When it came time to start production on The Twilight Saga: New Moon, producers of the much-anticipated Twilight sequel faced an awkward conundrum. Author Stephenie Meyer, having penned the second chapter of her teen vampire saga before production on the first film began, cast Bella Swan’s forbidden paramour, Edward Cullen, as essentially a background character in New Moon. But that was before a dreamy English bloke named Robert Pattinson arrived on the scene, inspiring an almost cult-like following with his performance as the brooding vampire badboy in Catherine Hardwicke’s blockbuster 2008 adaptation.

Producers of the subsequent sequel knew that the legions of Edward Cullen fans wouldn’t stand for a mere cameo from Pattinson in New Moon, so they scrambled to find ways to maximize the screen time of their most precious asset without compromising the integrity of the novel’s core storyline. Which is why Pattinson is often photographed in slow-motion or depicted as an Obi-Wan Kenobi-like apparition in the latest film.

How did Pattinson feel about his expanded role in New Moon? We posed the question to him in our exclusive interview:
