Firefox Flicks Video Contest Winners Announced

Pete Macomber’s a documentary-style film Daredevil won Mozilla’s Firefox Flicks video contest aimed at promoting the Web browser through short film.

The winner, announced Friday at the San Francisco International Film Festival, was one of 280 30-second submissions (Click here to view the Firefox Flicks videos). The contest wraps up the initial launch of the Firefox Flicks campaign, which will continue throughout 2006.


Daredevil captures the life of a girl whose “other” browser is a surfboard. “I’ve always been a daredevil,” the girl says. “It’s kind of like a lifestyle. It’s really all just about the ride.” As the waves creep up to her feet, the screen reads, “My other browser is a surfboard.”

Macomber admits his subject, Ella, had really been talking about surfing the waves, not the Internet. “But she knew this was about Firefox,” he said.

The Venice, California-based filmmaker, who has been making commercials and music videos for five years, told PC World magazine he made his the ad using a Mac, Final Cut video-editing software, and a Panasonic DV camcorder.

He describes the lighting for his clip as Firefox-esque: “The sky is a brilliant blue and orange that’s reminiscent of the Firefox logo.

“To me, the best thing about the whole Firefox Flicks project is not that it resulted in browser ads, but that it showed off just how powerful desktop-based video and animation have become. If you’ve got talent and creativity, you don’t need a Hollywood budget to make mini-films with a Hollywood-like sheen,” he said.

Macomber walks away with $5,000 in gift certificates to the electronics retailer B&H. The video, meanwhile, will be shortlisted for the NY Festival of Advertising’s 2006 International Advertising Awards in May.

According to Mozilla, Firefox Flicks is the first large-scale community-produced video campaign for a software product.

“The response to Firefox Flicks has been fantastic with entries from as far away as Australia, but the unifying theme has been passion,” Asa Dotzler, Mozilla community coordinator, said in a statement. “This contest provided a unique way for our community to become a part of the Mozilla project. We thank everyone who participated for helping us launch the ongoing Firefox Flicks campaign with such a big bang.”
