Candyman originally came out in 1992 and it scared the hell out of me. Bees still worry me (yes I know they are an important resource, but what if?). The concept is simple, say his name 5 times and he appears to kill, much like Beetlejuice or Bloody Mary. The story was one of horror with race and social inequalities, and when it was announced that Jordan Peele would be bringing it to this century you know he was going to bring those important tropes.
This film takes place years after the first where an artist Anthony McCoy (Yahya Abdul-Mateen II) and his girlfriend, gallery director Brianna Cartwright (Teyonah Parris) move into a now gentrified Chicago’s Cabrini Green neighborhood. Anthony feels inspired by the tales of Candyman so he starts to draw him trying to get people to say his name.
All in all, all those important things from the first film are back, and Peele might have another hit on his hands.
‘Candyman’ releases on June 12, 2020.
