Well, Fox Searchlight just bought themselves a few more Oscars.
The Tree of Life, written and directed by Oscar winner Terrence Malick (The Thin Red Line), was just purchased by Fox Searchlight from Bill Pohlad’s River Road Entertainment and will release in 2011 (presumably premiering at Sundance), ensuring an early Oscar race next year.
The film stars Brad Pitt and Sean Penn. Although details are currently limited, the plot centers on a family with three boys during the 1950s. The young men are put through turmoil, and the result is a coming of age story with themes of life and death.
Pretty vague description, we know. But rumors are that Malick is trying something completely radical with the film. With a terrific duo in Penn and Pitt, we can’t help but assume that The Tree of Life will be financially successful and have the Academy drooling. Now Malick can hopefully focus his attention on his developing romance picture with its equally all-star cast (including Rachel McAdams, Christian Bale, Ben Affleck, Javier Bardem and Olga Kurylenko) and actually release two films in the same decade.
