Aye yi yi yi yi! It’s been over 20 years since Rita Repulsa set out to conquer Earth and Zordon assembled a “team of teenagers with attitude” to bring her down. Today, we’re happy to share some new details about the upcoming the Power Rangers reboot.
The movie, titled Saban’s Power Rangers (after series co-creator Haim Saban), will be released on January 13, 2017. The original script was penned by Ashley Miller and Zack Stentz (X-Men: First Class, Thor) and the movie will be helmed by director Dean Israelite (Project Almanac).
It was previously believed that the Ranger team in the reboot would be the same characters as the original series, but Collider is now reporting that the movie will feature a completely new set of Rangers:
Callum Oliver – The Red Ranger/Tyrannosaurus
Priya Patel – The Pink Ranger/Pterodactyl
Brian Olson – The Blue Ranger/Triceratops
Oscar Fernandez – The Black Ranger/Mastodon
Teyana Jones – The Yellow Ranger/Sabre-tooth Tiger
While this means that the film will showcase an all new Ranger team, we don’t believe the reboot will be entirely disconnected from the original series. Astute Power Ranger fans might recognize that the new Red Ranger, Callum Oliver, shares a last name with the original Green/White Ranger, Tommy Oliver. Is it possible that the new Red Ranger is the son of the greatest Power Ranger of all-time?
It’s also believed that the original costumes will be making an appearance in the movie, so we’re hoping the original cast will make a cameo to pass the torch to the new Ranger team. Earlier this month, we talked to Jason David Frank, the original Green Ranger, about a possible appearance in the movie. “I don’t know where I’m going to fit and what it is,” he told us, “but like they say, what’s the movie without the Green Ranger?”

We’ve always believed the Power Rangers could have saved themselves a lot of time if they showed up to every fight already in their Zords. These mechanical dinosaurs were the Power Rangers’ greatest weapons and fans of the original series will be happy to know that the new Rangers will be using the original set of Zords (which have presumably been collecting dust in Zordon’s garage for the past 20 years).
Finally, over the past couple of weeks, the cast announcements have been coming out faster than you can say “It’s Morphin’ Time!” In order to keep production costs down, the movie will feature an entire cast of newcomers including Dacre Montgomery (the Red Ranger), Ludi Lin (the Black Ranger) RJ Cyler (the Blue Ranger), and Naomi Scott (the Pink Ranger).
