Disney must be hoping to repeat magic. Gore Verbinski, who directed the first three Pirates of the Caribbean movies for Disney, has officially signed on to direct an adaptation of The Lone Ranger. He seemed to have something special going on with pirates, and Disney is hoping he can do the same for cowboys.
Consider this: he helped turn a terribly boring anamorphic-robot drifting log ride into a mutli-billion dollar film franchise and create one of the most iconic characters of the past decade. Maybe he’ll have the same luck with an out of date television show about cowboys and Indians and one of television’s most iconic roles. There hasn’t been word on who will play either the Lone Ranger or Tonto, but considering Johnny Depp is a favorite of Verbinski’s (who DOESN’T favor him, by the way?) and his name has been tossed around with this project for a while, we’ll just go ahead and say Depp is the favorite.
Remaking The Lone Ranger doesn’t sound like the best idea in the world. I’m not sure how a show can have mothballs around it, but this show feels like it does. Big moth balls. However, Verbinski seems to be a very visual director with a flare for the magical, so he seems to be the best choice for this. Hi-ho-Verbinski (yeesh, I guess it was good the horse wasn’t Polish).
