So Carla Gugino has just signed on to star with Jim Carrey in the updated remake of the beloved (I’m assuming) children’s book Mr. Popper’s Penguins. I assume, of course, because I haven’t even heard of the book and yet all the articles site it as a classic. Apparently it’s read in school? I don’t remember that. Must have missed that day in class. But kids read slow, so it must take them like a month to read it? Did I miss a month of school? My memory is hazy.
Anyway, they’re updating it. Jim Carrey plays the eponymous Popper who suddenly finds himself in charge of a group of penguins. And because this is a movie, he takes them in, wacky hijinks ensue, and lessons are learned all around. Gugino will probably play his wife, probably be upset with the way he is living his life, and then probably take him back when she sees how much he has learned after she sees the penguins. Probably.
But in the book Popper abandons his family to go on an expedition with an explorer and the penguins to the North Pole to see if they (the penguins) can live there. Yeah, he’s leaving on a “boat” to travel up “North,” with an “explorer” and some “penguins” for weeks at a time. Riiiiiiiight.
You can see Gugino in the upcoming Zack Snyder (with whom she previously worked with in Watchmen) fetish/anime/pure-Id-fest Sucker Punch. That will definitely confuse the kids, seeing Madam Gorski play with a tub full of penguins. But confuse them in a good way.
