5 Harry Potter Fan Theories Behind Severus Snape

Severus Snape is an amazing character that has such an interesting arch that many can’t think about Harry Potter without thinking about him. It also doesn’t hurt that the incredible Alan Rickman portrayed him on screen. So now that the books and movies are done many fans are starting to think that we don’t know everything about the professor. Here are five theories fans have created about Snape.

1. Snape is the Stone brother

From the Tale of Beedle the Bard there are three brothers that evade death. One has an unbeatable wand that isn’t actually unbeatable, the other has a resurrection stone which brings back the dead but not the way they were, and the third has the invisible cloak which he uses to hide from death. The theory believes Voldemort is the unbeatable wand brother, Snape is the resurrection stone brother, and Harry is the cloak brother since he is left to live out his life to later go to death. Dumbledore is the old friend who is death himself. The reason why Snape is supposedly the stone brother is because his grief over Lily’s death. This theory Rowling actually supports.

2. Snape’s first words to Harry is a hidden apology

A Tumblr user named Tom Hiddles might have figured out what we all overlooked. The user wrote “The first thing Snape asks Harry is ‘Potter! What would I get if I added powdered root of asphodel to an infusion of wormwood?’ According to Victorian Flower Language, asphodel is a type of lily meaning ‘My regrets follow you to the grave’ and wormwood means ‘absence’ and also typically symbolized bitter sorrow. If you combined that, it meant ‘I bitterly regret Lily’s death.’

3. Snape killed Hedwig

The reality of him killing Dumbledore is already heartbreaking, but this?! There is a theory that Snape was with the Death Eaters who were following the Order of the Phoenix. The Order had multiple members drink Polyjuice Potion to look like Harry, but one thing would give Harry’s identity away. He was the only one who had Hedwig. The theory goes that Snape tried to save Harry by killing Hedwig so all of the Harrys looked the same.

4. Snape’s supposed hatred for Harry has nothing to do with James

The professor often compares Harry to his father and not in a good way. So many fans believe his hatred for him is due to his father marrying the love of his life. However one theory states his wasn’t so petty. Snape knew he had a job and keeping Harry far from him would be best to protect Harry from Voldemort.

5. Snape is a vampire

It maybe a litter far fetched, but one published theory thinks the professor had a secret. In Prizoner of Azkaban you may remember Professor Snape assigning his Defense Against the Dark Arts class an essay on werewolves to out Lupin as one. However we also know that Lupin assigned an essay on vampires. Was this payback? Another point they made is that Professor Quirrell was infamously scared of vampires and his classroom reeked of garlic. He also happened to be afraid of Snape. Although this might have been an interesting thought the author dispelled this theory on Twitter.
