Here Is Everything You Need To Know About ‘Suicide Squad’

It seems like in 2016, Warner Bros. and DC Comics are looking to stay in pace with Marvel. With the release of Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice on March 25th, and the release of Suicide Squad on August 5th, this will be the year of the superhero. Though we already know a great deal about Batman v Superman, the super villains of Suicide Squad have been kept under wraps. With the release of the first official trailer from the film, here is everything you need to know about Suicide Squad.

What’s the film about?

While no specific plot for the film has been released yet, we do know that the Suicide Squad aka Task Force X is a team of super villains that the government has imprisoned. However, things get a bit hairy when the government realizes they can use these super villains to their advantage. The team is sent out on special tasks, and if they succeed their sentences are reduce. If they fail well….they fail. Every member of the team also has mini bombs implanted inside them, which can be detonated if they go against their mission or try to escape.

Who is in the movie?

Directed by David Ayer who wrote the scripts for both The Fast and the Furious and Training Day, Suicide Squad‘s mega star cast includes  Will Smith as Deadshot, Cara Delevingne as Enchantress, Jai Courtney as Boomerang, Joel Kinnaman as Rick Flagg, Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje as Killer Croc,  Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn and Jared Leto as The Joker.  Viola Davis will also be starring in the film as Amanda Waller aka The Wall, the woman who is in charge of the Suicide Squad.

Let’s get into the characters

Lex Luthor

Yes, we realize that Jesse Eisenberg‘s Lex Luthor is a major character in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, however, his story line just might have a direct correlation to Suicide Squad (he is a villain after all.) Word on the street is that the Suicide Squad will be sent in to stop Luthor’s superhuman trafficking operation. Apparently, his master plan has something to do with Enchantress. Look out for some hints in Batman v Superman.

So who exactly is Enchantress, and what does Lex Luther want with her? Cara Delevingne’s character is the least well known in the comic book world, but here is what we do know. In the comics, Enchantress is a teenage girl named June Moore. After stumbling into a secret passage while in a cave, June encounters a demon who tells her she is going to be a mystical hero. When she says the word “Enchantress,” June is transformed into a black-haired, costumed hero with magical abilities. However, instead of becoming the hero that the demon spoke of, Enchantress becomes an insane criminal. Though she joins the Suicide Squad in the comics, the rumor is that Enchantress is actually one of the main villains in the film; hence her connection to Lex Luthor.

The Joker

Stepping into Caesar Romero, Jack Nicholson and Heath Ledger‘s footsteps, Jard Leto is going to put his own spin on Batman’s most menacing nemesis, The Joker. Despite the new trailer, there isn’t much we know about Leto’s Joker. However, the rumor is that Amanda Waller has him locked in Belle Reve prison complex, but he’s actually just there to keep his girlfriend/assistant Harley Quinn in check. Apparently, The Joker will be making a great escape in Suicide Squad. Ben Affleck‘s Batman might also be making an appearance in this film. Leto has said that The Joker is a “beautiful disaster”, and he never broke character while filming. Will Smith has said he actually never met Jared Leto the actor.

Harley Quinn

Originally a psychiatrist at Arkham Asylum, Dr. Harleen Quinzel was corrupted by The Joker and became both his assistant and girlfriend.  Margot Robbie recently said about her character, “Harley is creepy, violent, crazy — all of the things that I aspire to be!” If you need any further hints about The Joker and Harley Quinn’s relationship then you should know that Jared Leto sent Margot Robbie a pet rat named “Rat Rat”, which she treasures and feeds organic berries from Whole Foods.

Will Smith is embodying the most notorious assassin in all of DC comics. Deadshot will stop at nothing to take out his targets, and he never misses a shot. Also known as Floyd Lawton, Deadshot has a death wish which should make for an even more interesting story line. This is one of the first times we will be seeing Smith play a character with such questionable morals.

Amanda Waller

How To Get Away With Murder star, Viola Davis is the perfect choice to play Amanda Waller. She’s the force behind the Suicide Squad and though she doesn’t have any special abilities, The Wall is not a woman you want to mess with. Davis has said, The Wall’s strengths are, “her intelligence and her complete lack of guilt.” She will do whatever it takes to keep the country safe, so the members of the Suicide Squad are expendable to her. Essentially, she is a way more ruthless Nick Fury. Rumor is that she may even be keeping Jason Momoa‘s Aquaman prisoner. We’ll be seeing a lot more of Davis as The Wall, she has signed on to three more DC films following Suicide Squad.

Rick Flag

The role of  Rick Flag went to Joel Kinnaman once Tom Hardy had drop out of the film. A former Special Forces operative with a mind for strategy, Flag is the soldier that keeps the other members of the Suicide Squad in check. We don’t know much about Flag, but we do know that he’s the government’s golden boy and is willing to work with super villains if it means serving his country.

Captain Boomerang

Australian actor Jai Courtney will play George “Digger” Harkness aka Captain Boomerang. A native Australian and skilled boomerang thrower, Harkness eventually turned to a life of crime which leads him to the Suicide Squad. In the comics, Boomerang is a menace, he blurts out racist comments and enjoys watching mayhem from the sidelines instead of joining in the fights. We’ll see if the film tones down some of his more trying personality traits.

El Diablo

Jay Hernandez will be the first actor to bring Suicide Squad’s El Diablo to life, and he couldn’t look more prepared for the role. There have been many story arcs when it comes to this character, but in Suicide Squad, El Diablo is the tatted and bald Chato Santana, a former criminal who seems to have a major obsession with fire. Hernandez said that his character “just wants to stay out of the fight while most of [the Squad members] are happy to get out there and kill people”

Killer Croc

Played by British-Nigerian actor Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaj in super heavy makeup, Killer Croc was born with reptilian skin and raised in a very abusive household, causing him to turn to a life of crime. Like many of the other character in Suicide Squad, much of Akinnuoye-Agbaj’s performance has been kept under wraps, but from the details of his costuming alone, we know that we’ll be seeing a lot of Killer Croc.

Adam Beach, Suicide Squad, Warner Bros, 012016
Warner Bros,

Played by actor Adam Beach, Christopher Weiss aka Slipknot is an assassin known for his use of ropes. Slipknot winds up on Amanda Waller’s radar and joins the Suicide Squad shortly there after.

In her first film appearance, Karen Fukuhara will be playing Tatsu Yamashiro. A master at hand-to-hand combat and swordsmanship, Katana is actually Rick Flag’s bodyguard. She has morals and codes, but she can also slice through one-hundred people without taking a breath.
