‘Hobbit’ Sequel Not Based on ‘Hobbit’ Novel?

Yes, folks it is true; Guillermo del Toro is considering a Hobbit sequel that links the original story of Bilbo Baggins with the Lord of the Rings trilogy. This means the writer/director would add a new story to the franchise, not previously told in the books. It was initially assumed that the Hobbit novel would be broken into two parts, but today while promoting Hellboy II the director confessed he has other plans in store.

The Oscar nominated director explained, “I think the book should be contained if possible in the first movie, but this is an exploration. The second one would be a movie that would [weave] through the gap of about half a century between the Hobbit and the first of the trilogy films and connect them. Ideally, ideally we would have…a first movement to a symphony of five films, this would be ideal.”

Del Toro admits it is still “too early” to tell what will happen and promises, “we will be faithful to what we believe has to be done.”
