It’s Morphin’ Time! The ‘Power Rangers’ Are Back To Slay The Scene In The 21st Century

If you’re a child of the ’90s like us, you know just how pivotal Power Rangers were to your childhood Saturday mornings. Luckily, for nostalgia’s sake, and for the sake of 21st-century kiddies, Lionsgate is making an all new film about the five alien-blasting teens which is set to premiere March 24, 2017.

The film’s director, Dean Israelite chatted with Entertainment Weekly about the film, and the direction he wanted to take the story in. He said, “The new Power Rangers is a coming of age story for these ‘disenfranchised and disparate’ high schoolers, who are not friends when the new story begins.” The cast may be familiar to you, pop star Becky G, RJ Cyler, Naomi Scott, Ludi Lin, and Dacre Montgomery will be starring as Trini, Billy, Kimberly, Zack, and Jason, respectively. Elizabeth Banks will also star as Rita Repulsa.

Power Rangers was always super diverse, and though the races of the new rangers have been swapped, the film will still reflect not only the original diversity of the franchise but the world in which we live in today. Israelite said of the decision, “From the very beginning, diversity was a very important part of the whole process. We switched all of the races around, but we made sure that the essence of each of those characters are who they were in the original show, and this really will be an origin story of those characters.”

We’re also excited to learn about the super modern suits the Power Rangers will be rocking, Apparently, they will be like no other superhero suits we’ve seen thus far. (Which is a tall order considering how Marvel and D.C. Comics have been killing it costume-wise as of late.) Israelite worked with Weta Workshop, who did the costuming in The Lord of the Rings franchise. He told EW, “They’re suits that morph onto our kids, so they already have this almost metaphysical quality to them.”
