If we can’t have more Matty D from the next Bourne movie, I think Jeremy Renner is good second choice. Tony Gilroy was looking at Oscar Issac for the lead role in The Bourne Legacy, but Universal wasn’t really stoked about the Sucker Punch actor and now they’ve got their sights set on Renner, according to Latino Review. Word has it that an offer is imminent.
Before any of you Bourne fans get all in a tizzy — like me — let’s keep in mind that Gilroy promises that he’s not trying to replace Matt Damon with a new actor and that the character will be different from the original films. He also says this film is stand-alone and that this isn’t a reboot or a shoot-off of the originals. Well, that’s all well and good in theory, but in case you forgot, the reason it’s called The Bourne Legacy is because it’s about Jason Bourne and well, Damon IS Bourne. I’m really not sure how you can do a Bourne movie with a “new hero” but I guess only time will tell.
The good thing is that if they nab Renner, even if it’s some weird shoot-off of the original Bourne material, at least we’ll get to enjoy Renner in a leading role as an action hero. Now, that is something I think we’d all be happy to see.
