Jerusha Hess, Stephenie Meyer Partner for Indie Rom-Com ‘Austenland’

THR reports that Jerusha Hess, wife of filmmaker Jared Hess, will make her directorial debut with Austenland, an indie rom-com about “a single, thirtysomething woman” whose love life is stunted by an obsession with Mr. Darcy, the fictional character from the Jane Austen novel Pride and Prejudice. Though Jerusha has yet to occupy the director’s chair, she does not lack for moviemaking experience – she served as co-writer on all three of her husband’s feature films: Napoleon Dynamite, Nacho Libre, and Gentleman Broncos. (She also exec-produced the latter, which we won’t hold against her.)

Austenland has some major producing clout behind it in the form of Stephenie Meyer, author of the blockbuster Twilight saga and producer of its two-part film finale, Breaking Dawn. The collaboration makes for an odd marriage of styles: Hess has heretofore trafficked exclusively in quirk, while Meyer’s game is teen harlequin melodrama. (They do share the same faith, which I suppose counts for something.) Keri Russell (Extraordinary Measures), J.J. Feild (Captain America: The First Avenger), and Bret McKenzie (Flight of the Conchords) are slated to star.
