Connick Jr., and Morgan Freeman Swim With The Dolphin Tale
It’s like the early nineties all over again! Harry Connick Jr, Morgan Freeman, and Ashley Judd are in negotiations to star in Dolphin Tale, a live-action 3D family film. Dolphin Tale marks Hollywood’s glorious return to the inspirational aquatic mammal genre, which first flopped into our hearts with Free Willy and quickly flopped out again with Flipper and Andre (not to mention Free Willy 2, 3 and Escape From Pirate’s Cove). The auteur responsible for tapping into America’s unstoppable craving for tales of heartwarming fish is Charles Martin Smith, of Air Bud.
Dolphin Tale is based on the true story of a dolphin rescued off the coast of Florida after its tail (get it?) is destroyed by a crab trap. Marine biologists at Clearwater Marine Aquarium worked with a prosthetist to devise an artificial tail for the dolphin. Of course, for the film, the team of certified professionals have been replaced with a small child who befriends the dolphin and learns a valuable lesson about overcoming adversity. If they sign on to the project, Connick Jr. will play a vet who runs a marine hospital and Freeman will play the doctor who designs the dolphin’s prothesis. Judd is considering the part of the boy’s mother. Prepare to temporarily start caring about dolphins again in 2011.
