Michael Patrick King Spares Us a ‘Sex and the City’ Prequel

Most rational people assumed the Sex and the City franchise to be finished after 2010’s critically savaged Sex and the City 2. Then, a few months ago, some rather unsettling rumors began to swirl about a possible third SatC flick, one that would chronicle the adventures of Carrie, Samantha, Miranda and Charlotte before they became the shallow and entitled quartet we last saw traipsing across Abu Dhabi, reaching new heights (depths?) of cultural insensitivity. There were even potential castmembers being discussed: Blake Lively as Samantha, Selena Gomez as Charlotte, Emma Roberts as Miranda, and Elizabeth Olsen as Carrie.

Alas, sanity appears to have at least partly prevailed. While promoting his new CBS series 2 Broke Girls, SatC producer-director-writer Michael Patrick King flatly denied any involvement with the rumored project, stating “I’m not working on any Sex and the City prequel at all,” and “I have no connection to the prequel.” While tremendously encouraging, the statements aren’t quite as definitive as one would hope. A third SatC film could indeed still be incubating, somewhere, without King’s name attached. And as long as that possibility exists, we will never truly be safe.
