18 On-Screen Couples With The Worst Chemistry

Chemistry is not something that can be faked. There are some on-screen couples with undeniable chemistry, like Noah and Allie in The Notebook. Even though in real life, Ryan Gosling and Rachel McAdams could not stand each other while filming that movie, those two obviously were meant to be. That is not the case in this situation. These 17 on-screen couples could not muster up enough feelings for their co-star and the result was very obvious on screen. Even though some of these couples were couples in real life, it did not translate.

Kristen Stewart and Robert Pattinson - Twilight

Summit Entertainment
These two might have been a couple in real life, but that chemistry did not make it onto the screen. Their first kiss scene in Twilight still makes us cringe to this day. But we'll always ship Edward & Bella, no matter what.

We don't need to explain this one. Bennifer should never have acted together during their engagement.
Natalie Portman and Hayden Christensen - Star Wars Episode II Attack of the Clones

Any Star Wars fan can agree that the worst part (and there were a lot) of Star Wars Episode II Attack of the Clones was this couple. How could their chemistry be that bad? How do casting directors let that happen?

Mischa Barton and Benjamin McKenzie -  The OC
Mischa Barton, Benjamin Mckenzie, The OC
Ben McKenzie was pretty iconic as Ryan Atwood, but his lack of chemistry with Mischa Barton's Marissa Cooper was just too obvious to most viewers. We cared more about Ryan than we did about Ryan & Marissa.
Katie Holmes and Christian Bale - Batman Begins

Warner Bros. vis Everett Collection
We're not sure if Christian Bale just can't master on-screen chemistry, because he didn't have much with Maggie Gyllenhaal in The Dark Knight, but his on-screen time with Katie Holmes was considerably worse.
Julianne Hough and Josh Duhamel - Safe Haven
Julianne Hough, Josh Duhamel, Safe Haven
Relativity Media via Everett Collection
As far as Nicholas Sparks movies go, Safe Haven was lukewarm. It has an interesting plot, but the book was much better and we think a large part of that has to do with the two leads inability to make us believe they loved each other.

Bonnie Wright and Daniel Radcliffe - Harry Potter
Bonnie Wright, Daniel Radcliffe, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows
Warner Bros.
Harry Potter had one great couple (Ron & Hermione = 4ever) but that power couple's chemistry and build up clearly triumphed over Daniel Radcliffe and Bonnie Wright's fumbled romance in the Harry Potter series. We're going to blame this on the fact that the movies seriously downplayed the awesomeness that is Ginny, and Bonnie and Dan didn't get to build the romance like Rupert Grint and Emma Watson.
Cobie Smulders and Neil Patrick Harris - How I Met Your Mother
Cobie Smulders, Neil Patrick Harris, How I Met Your Mother
On How I Met Your Mother, the couple we always loved was Marshall and Lily. So when Barney and Robin got together, not only did we not like it, we actually kind of hated it because these two did not have any chemistry, at all.

Adam Sandler and Winona Ryder - Mr. Deeds

Columbia Pictures via Everett Collection
We're not blaming Winona, we're giving all the blame to Adam Sandler here. We've never seen a movie with Sandler where he had amazing chemistry with any woman, though his chemistry with Drew Barrymore is better than most of his attempts.
Carey Mulligan and Leonardo DiCaprio - The Great Gatsby

Warner Bros. via Everett Collection
We like to believe the reason that these two had such terrible chemistry is due to the fact that Leonardo DiCaprio should only ever act romantically with Kate Winslet.
Keira Knightley and Aaron Taylor Johnson - Anna Karenina

Focus Features
We don't know what happened with this period piece. Visually, it's beautiful. The costumes are excellent, but the romance? Very lackluster.

Angelina Jolie and Johnny Depp - The Tourist

Columbia Pictures via Everett Collection
These two were meant to have bad chemistry? Is that what this film was trying to say? Either way, two famous faces does not a great on-screen couple make.
Kate Hudson and Matthew McConaughey - Fool's Gold
Kate Hudson, Matthew McConaughey, Fool's Gold
Warner Bros. via Everett Collection
Of the few times these guys worked together, Fool's Gold was easily their worst. As a couple at odds, we can understand why things were awkward and tense, but there should still be something there.
Nicole Kidman and Hugh Jackman - Australia

You'd think two Australian power houses would have the chemistry of the gods, especially in a movie literally named Australia, but they did not.

Vince Vaughn and Malin Akerman - Couples Retreat
Vince Vaughn, Malin Akerman, Couples Retreat
Universal Pictures via Everett Collection
Maybe it makes sense that for a movie called Couple's Retreat these two don't have good chemistry, as they're supposed to be on the rocks. But you'd think we'd be able to believe they were once a happy couple based on their interactions, instead we spent the movie scratching our heads over this couple.
Katie Holmes and James Van der Beek - Dawson's Creek
Katie Holmes, James Van der Beek, Dawson's Creek
The WB
These two didn't have chemistry because Joey BELONGED with Pacey. End of story.
Channing Tatum and Cody Horn - Magic Mike
Channing Tatum, Cody Horn, Magic Mike
Warner Bros. via Everett Collection
It's not very surprising that there was no chemistry between these two, because this movie wasn't actually about love. This movie was meant for sexy dance moves and abs.
