Steven Spielberg and Will Smith may be teaming up for a remake of Korean director Chan-Wook Park’s Oldboy. DreamWorks is in the process of securing the remake rights, says Variety.
In the 2003 original, a man is kidnapped and held in a dingy hotel room for 15 years without explanation. Suddenly, he’s released with money, a cell phone and clothes as he sets off to find out who destroyed his life — and take his revenge.
Variety notes that Spielberg had been looking for an opportunity to make a film with Smith, who would play the title role.
The project was originally set up with Fast and Furious director Justin Lin, notes SlashFilm. The original Oldboy won a slew of international awards including the Cannes Grand Jury Prize.
