‘Star Trek Into Darkness’: Kirk’s Starship-Sized Fail — TRAILER

star trek into darkness teaser

The trailer for J.J. Abrams’ original 2008 Star Trek film opened with Captain Christopher Pike (Bruce Greenwood) challenging the aimless James T. Kirk (Chris Pine) to a life in the Starfleet. Echoing that elegant setup, the official teaser for the follow-up Star Trek Into Darkness begins with Pike’s delivering yet another bit of wisdom for the young Mr. Kirk:

“There’s greatness in you, but there’s not an ounce of humility. You think you can’t make mistakes. But there will come a moment when you realize you’re wrong about that.”

If the trailer is to be believed, that “moment” will be the arrival of the mysterious villain John Harrison (Benedict Cumberbatch), a terrorist against the Federation with a personal vendetta against someone inside Kirk’s crew (which could be Kirk himself — secrets run wild in the Abrams Trek universe). With Pike’s words behind it, the trailer leads into Harrison’s own haunting voiceover, accompanied by a bevy of destructive images. Kirk’s entire crew is in jeopardy when Harrison’s plan is executed. It’s hard to imagine everyone making it.
