With over $1 billion in worldwide ticket sales already and a third film ready to bow on June 30th, Summit Entertainment is actively searching for a director to helm the final installment(s) of their blue-chip franchise The Twilight Saga.
Entertainment Weekly reports that Sofia Coppola, Gus Van Sant and Bill Condon has been approached to direct Breaking Dawn, the best-selling fourth and final chapter of the vampire romance series that has made Taylor Lautner, Kristen Stewart and Robert Pattinson international stars.
The news keeps in line with the pattern of hiring a new director for each successive film in the series. Catherine Hardwicke directed Twilight, while Chris Weitz directed 2009’s New Moon and David Slade was behind the camera for this summer’s Eclipse.
A major factor which may go into the decision is that the director would need to make two films, since the studio has decided to split the final novel into a cliff hanging two-parter. The magazine adds that no decision will be made until screenwriter Melissa Rosenberg’s detailed outline is delivered to the directors sometime next week.
