The Next ‘Hunger Games’? Charlie Kaufman Boards ‘Chaos Walking’ Adaptation

Charlie KaufmanAs a screenwriter, Charlie Kaufman has always been highly unpredictable, which is why we shouldn’t be too surprised that he’s signed up to adapt the first entry in the Chaos Walking series of young adult novels.

The Academy Award-winning writer of offbeat (to say the least) fare such as Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind and Adaptation will pen the script for The Knife of Never Letting Go, which centers on a young man named Todd Hewitt, who holds the key to preventing planetary destruction amid a dystopian future.

Lionsgate is clearly hoping to strike the same YA gold it did with its recent Hunger Games, which has already crossed the $500 million mark around the world and is on the fast track toward becoming a hugely lucrative franchise. Which is what makes the very adult-minded Kaufman a bit of a curious — but certainly no less exciting — pick. Kaufman most recently wrote and directed 2008’s mind-f**k dramedy Synecdoche, New York and will pen next year’s comedy Frank or Francis.
