So last month we reported that Kate Beckinsale had decided to leave her successful husband and live with an entertainment writer, spending the rest of her days in the throes of passion with him (at least that’s what I got out of that article). It was also reported that she had joined the cast of the Mark Wahlberg topped remake of the Icelandic thriller titled for us Americans as Contraband.
I thought that was the end of the story. Surely with two such stars this film would get made. Like the bacon buffet at a bar mitzvah, I was just wrong. Apparently there were some budget worries (it was originally priced at $40 million) that had the original production company bothered. They did some fancy financial finagling (its a technical term) and got it down to $30 million, prompting Universal Pictures to say yes and heralding a green light.
Production is still a ways off though. Though Balthasar Kormakur (Inhale) is set to direct, Old Marky Mark still has some publicity to do for The Fighter, which some people are laughably saying he will get an Academy Award nomination for. We’ll see. Kate Beckinsale, meanwhile, is also set to star in another Oscar-bait film in which she plays a homeless, semi-mentally handicapped orphan who teaches herself Kung Fu and eventually takes down Nazis in a concentration camp. And its a musical. It’s called Underworld 4. We’re guessing the film will roll sometime after all that’s done.
