Vampires don’t suck as ‘Eclipse’ passes ‘New Moon’

Even though “Vampires Suck” got knocked down to third after a first place Wednesday debut, all is not lost in the romantic world of bloodsuckers and werewolves as Summit Entertainment’s “The Twilight Saga: Eclipse” on Thursday surpassed the $296,623,634 domestic box office total of “New Moon.” On Thursday in 1,212 theatres, the third installment of the mega-blockbuster franchise earned $190,143 and that was enough to bring its total to $296,649,934 and take the domestic gross crown away from its worthy predecessor.  See full story at Twilight about to eclipse “New Moon!’

First PlaceSylvester Stallone‘s The Expendables punched its way back to the top of the chart on Thursday, proving that the old school actioner still has the muscle to kick some vampire butt, raking in just over $2.7 million at the box office for a cumulative $48.4 million gross since it opened last Friday with star power from the likes of Sylvester Stallone, Jason Statham, and Jet Li.

Second Place – Julia Roberts‘ romantic travelogue Eat Pray Love was second at the box office Thursday, garnering $2.7 million.  The film is playing in over 3,000 theaters and has grossed $35.1 million since it opened opposite The Expendables last Friday.

Third Place – Aaron Seltzer and Jason Friedberg‘s latest pop culture parody fest Vampires Suck took aim at the beloved Twilight franchise and dropped to third in its second day of release with $2.3 million at the box office on Thursday.  The comedy opened to a number one debut on Wednesday with $4.02 million in almost 3,000 theaters nationwide.
