Warner Brother Studios celebrates 98th birthday

Good afternoon Hollywooders! Happy #HollyGood Tuesday where we break down the world of Hollywood. From Hollywood history to bizarre facts, we have got you covered.

Today we are diving into the world of Warner Brothers Studios. The iconic studio just celebrated its 98th birthday last week, so it’s only fair to tell its story.

It all began with four brothers…

The four Warner brothers—Sam, Albert, Harry, and Jack took a huge gamble when they launched the entertainment company, Warner Brothers Studios in 1923. The launch of the studio is one of the greatest success stories in Hollywood, and the brothers had to overcome some pretty intense obstacles in order to succeed.

It was not until 1925 that the brother, Sam Warner, decided to introduce synchronized sound to films, to which his brother Harry Warner replied, “Who the heck wants to hear actors talk?”

If Harry could only see (and hear) movies today.

Post World War 2, Warner Brothers struggled to stay afloat, but once again became pioneers in the film industry in the 1950s. Successful films in the 1950s such as A Streetcar Named Desire, A Star is Born and The Searchers gave Warner Brothers the push they needed to get their groove back in Hollywood.

In the 1960’s Warner Brothers brought us films such as My Fair Lady and Who’s afraid of Virginia Woolf? but the real success of this era was offscreen. Warner Brothers became highly diversified, diving into video games, music, and comic books.

Throughout the 1960s and 1970s, Warner Brothers studios began doing guided tours and signed production deals with some of the most famous actors in the business, like Paul Newman, Robert Redford, and Clint Eastwood, and this brought the studio even more success through the 1980s.

In 1995, Warner Brothers and Tribune Company launched a niche market that targeted teenagers at the time. Charmed, Dawsons Creek, One Tree Hill, and Buffy The Vampire Slayer were some of 1980s babies’ most beloved shows growing up in the 1990s (Warner Brothers made some of the best movies of the 1990s too), and we have Warner Brothers to thank for that. I mean, who was grew up in the 1990s and wasn’t obsessed with Buffy the Vampire Slayer growing up?

We also have to thank Warner Brothers for the release of the most important movies for the: Harry Potter. Honestly, where would the world be without the Harry Potter movies?

What’s happening with Warner Brothers now?

Up until 2020, Warner Brothers Studios held guided tours of their Hollywood location and gave visitors from around the world a glimpse behind some of their favorite movies. Due to Covid-19, studio tours have been put on hold, but with things looking up, hopefully, they will open their doors soon.
