Spider-Man has been rebooted so many times you have to wonder if movie executives really just like to watch Uncle Ben die. Last year, Sony and Marvel struck an agreement to reboot the Spider-Man franchise once more, but with a catch: Spider-Man would be appearing for the first time in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Today, Marvel unveiled their latest trailer for Captain America: Civil War which showcased Spider-Man (Tom Holland) alongside Iron Man, Captain America, and the rest of The Avengers.
Last year, Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige promised that the Spider-Man reboot would not be an origin story and teased that Spider-Man’s suit “is different than any of the ones that have come before.” In the Civil War comic series, Tony Stark makes Parker a badass iron Spider-Man suit, however, it looks Spidey will be wearing his trademark red and blue suit with a few minor adjustments.
In the comics, Spider-Man is caught between his loyalty to Tony Stark and his dedication to his secret identity. However, as Feige explained, the film version of Civil War has less to do with secret identities and more to do with government oversight so we’re unsure what role Spider-Man will play in the Civil War. What’s not changed from the comics however, is the comedic mentor-mentee relationship between Tony Stark and Peter Parker (in the trailer, Stark summons Parker with the codeword “Underoos!”).
Spider-Man’s appearance in the trailer comes on the heels of an exciting casting announcement. Earlier this week, it was revealed that Disney Channel star Zendaya had been cast in the upcoming Spider-Man reboot. There’s no confirmation on who the singer/actress will be playing, but it’s widely believed she’ll be an updated version of Peter Parker’s roommate and potential love interest, Michele Gonzales.
Spidey fans will have to wait until July 7, 2017 to see their favorite web-slinger in his new standalone film, so for now this trailer will have to tide people over.
Captain America: Civil War hits theaters May 6, 2016.
