Watch: Trailer For Roland Emmerich’s ‘Anonymous’

When I first heard that Roland “I blow shit up for a living” Emmerich would be helming a tense political thriller about the works of William Shakespeare, which may or may not have been written by the famed playwright, I laughed merrily. The concept is intriguing, to say the least, but with a hack like Emmerich involved how was I supposed to take the film seriously?

Well, Sony Pictures has unveiled its first teaser for the mystery movie called, cryptically, Anonymous. True to Emmerich form, it features lots of CGI-establishing shots of Victorian England, the stage on which this tale of deception, love and death will be told. There’s not much else, other than quick shots of the cast, which includes Rhys Ifans, Vanessa Redgrave, Joely Richardson and David Thewlis, among others. The best part for me was the great Derek Jacobi narrating the introduction, but hopefully Anonymous will prove me wrong because believe it or not, I like to be proven wrong from time to time.
