The Wonder Woman sequel has exploded at the global box office, shattering records for COVID-era films.

Patty Jenkins’ blockbuster, Wonder Woman 1984, has snagged $85 million from its selected Christmas week (December 2020) release, smashing records set by Tenet earlier this year.

The film opened in America with $16.7 million.

As a result of the film’s success, movie bosses at Warner Bros. have fast-tracked a third film with Jenkins set to direct. Gal Gadot will also be back as Wonder Woman.

“As fans around the world continue to embrace Diana Prince, driving the strong opening weekend performance of Wonder Woman 1984, we are excited to be able continue her story with our real life Wonder Women – Gal and Patty – who will return to conclude the long-planned theatrical trilogy,” Warner Bros. chief Toby Emmerich says in a statement.
