Lil Nas X has taken the music industry by storm ever since his breakout single “Old Town Road” dropped in December of 2018. Since then, the pop sensation has collaborated with some of the most notable names in music including BTS, DaBaby, Nas, Billy Ray Cyrus, Travis Barker, Young Thug, and Cardi B.
Additionally, just 13 months after releasing “Old Town Road,” Lil Nas X earned six GRAMMY nominations, including one for Record of the Year and Album of the Year. At the end of the night, Lil Nas X took home two awards, cementing himself as a versatile singer that is here to stay.
Who is Lil Nas X?
Born Montero Lamar Hill, Lil Nas X chose his stage name as an homage to legendary rapper Nas. However, before the fame, Lil Nas X lived in the greater Atlanta area where he became an extremely savvy internet personality.
After posting short-form comedy videos on Facebook and Vine, Lil Nas X struck gold on Twitter. Back in 2017, the then high school student started secretly going viral for his Nicki Minaj fan account, @NasMaraj. However, the now-suspended account wasn’t just used for stanning Nicki Minaj. @NasMaraj had hundreds of thousands of followers and would constantly go viral for creating various memes and scenario threads.
After his rise to fame, Lil Nas X initially denied that the account was his but has since admitted to being the owner. Around the same time, Lil Nas X dropped out of the University of West Georgia in order to pursue his music career. After a few months of crashing on his sister’s couch, he finally recorded his breakout hit, “Old Town Road.”
Lil Nas X songs for every mood
Since Lil Nas X’s transition from Twitter star to Billboard star, he hasn’t put out a ton of music. However, every song he has put out absolutely SLAPS. Despite his small catalog of music, the singer seems to have a song for EVERY SINGLE MOOD.
In preparation for his upcoming album Montero, we’ve gone through and listened to every song ever released by Lil Nas X. So, if you’re curious which Lil Nas X track you should listen to based on your current mood, don’t worry, we’ve got you covered! Check out our list below of 7 Lil Nas X songs for every mood.
Lil Nas X songs for when you’re in a great mood: “Old Town Road (feat. Billy Ray Cyrus)”
Key Lyrics: “Can’t nobody tell me nothin’ / You can’t tell me nothin’”
“Old Town Road” put Lil Nas X on the map, and it’s the perfect song to vibe out to when you’re in a great mood. The track was first released on December 3, 2018, and quickly began racking up streams thanks to its growing popularity on TikTok.
Within the first month of its release, “Old Town Road” was the official anthem and inspiration behind the “Yeehaw Challenge” that overtook TikTok in late 2018. A quick look at this YouTube compilation will have you nostalgic over the app’s early days.
Success on social media allowed the track to debut on the Billboard Hot 100 at number 83. However, controversy struck in March of 2019 when “Old Town Road” appeared on both of Billboard’s Hot Country Songs and Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs. The music publication decided to remove it from the country charts, and the backlash only increased the song’s popularity. On April 13, 2019, “Old Town Road” reached number one on the Hot 100, where it would stay for a record-breaking 19 consecutive weeks.
In order to double down that “Old Town Road” was in fact a country song, Lil Nas X, now with Columbia Records, released a remix with Billy Ray Cyrus. The singer had always wanted the country star to hop on the track, as you can see from this tweet, sent out just a day after the initial song’s release:
twitter please help me get billy ray cyrus on this pic.twitter.com/UDoeiOZqc1
— nope ? (@LilNasX) December 5, 2018
The remix’s music video, released in May, was commercially and critically acclaimed, further proving that Lil Nas X is here to stay.
During “Old Town Road’s” historic stay atop the Billboard charts, Lil Nas X made history by becoming the first artist to come out as gay while having the number one record.
Just over a year after its release, “Old Town Road” would go on to win Best Music Video and Best Pop Duo/Group Performance at the GRAMMYs. Additionally, the track has sold over 18 million records, becoming the 14th highest-selling digital single of all time.
“Old Town Road” was also responsible for some hilarious memes, so let’s look back at some of the best.

Lil Nas X songs for when you’re moving on: “Panini (feat. DaBaby)”
Key Lyrics: “I thought you want this for my life, for my life / Said you wanted to see me thrive, you lied”
Lil Nas X followed up “Old Town Road” with a killer track to listen to while moving on. “Panini” sees the singer discuss fans who are very supportive of you while you’re unknown yet turn on you once the fame hits. However, the song’s themes of possession as well as DaBaby’s verse on the remix make it the perfect post-breakup song.
Despite initial confusion, “Panini” is a reference to the character of the same name from the Cartoon Network series Chowder. Lil Nas X confirmed that the character’s possessive nature over Chowder was an inspiration for the song.
this is panini, not the damn sandwich pic.twitter.com/cbuzmaJTt1
— nope ? (@LilNasX) May 11, 2019
However, despite the fact that the song has nothing to do with the delicious sandwich, Lil Nas X couldn’t resist joining celebrity chef Gordon Ramsey in the kitchen to whip up a delicious panini.

Lil Nas X songs for when you want to turn up in some cowboy boots: “Rodeo (feat. Cardi B)”
Key Lyrics: “I’ma take you from this party, we might go and have some sex / Or we do that later on, now we lit like cigarettes”
In this Lil Nas X song, he brings back his signature country trap style for “Rodeo,” and it absolutely SLAPS. The track—which sounds like a modern outlaw banger—sees the singer join forces with Cardi B.
“Rodeo’s” production in the opening seconds sounds like it is straight out of a Mexican standoff from an old country-western movie. However, once the beat kicks in, “Rodeo” becomes one of the hypest songs off of Lil Nas X’s EP, 7.
While Lil Nas X sings about staying with his girl through thick and thin, Cardi B raps about what she’d do if she caught her man cheating in her critically-acclaimed guest verse.
The love for Cardi B’s verse on “Rodeo” is through the roof.
Cardi’s verse on Rodeo was my preference

Lil Nas X songs for when you’re feeling confident: “Montero (Call Me By Your Name)”
Key Lyrics: “I’m not fazed, only here to sin / If Eve ain’t in your garden, you know that you can”
“Montero (Call Me By Your Name)” is a fantastic song to jam out to when you need a confidence boost. The song’s LGBTQA+ themes and lyrics prove that Lil Nas X doesn’t care what anyone else thinks and that he is now at a place where he is confident and proud of his sexuality.
The song’s two titles, “Montero” and “Call Me By Your Name,” show that Lil Nas X is comfortable showing fans his true self. “Montero” is pulled from the artist’s birth name, Montero Hill, and “Call Me By Your Name” is a reference to the LGBTQA+-themed romance novel and film of the same name. Through the song’s title, Lil Nas X is unapologetically telling audiences that he is proud of who he is.
“Montero (Call Me By Your Name)” had a somewhat controversial rollout, however, the song was praised by many critics and became Lil Nas X’s second track to appear atop the Billboard Hot 100. The track is currently the most popular single from the singer’s upcoming album, Montero.

Key Lyrics: “You need an instant ease / From your life where you got plenty / Of every hurt and heartbreak / You just take it all to the face”
“SUN GOES DOWN” is the most emotional song in Lil Nas X’s entire catalog, and it’s the perfect song to play when you’re in your feels.

Lil Nas X songs for when you feel like flexing: “HOLIDAY”

Key Lyrics: “Pack my past up in the back, oh, let my future take ahold / This is what I gotta do, can’t be regrettin’ when I’m old”
“C7osure (You Like)” is the ultimate empowering song. The track sees Lil Nas X telling his loved ones that he is ready to grow and nothing, not even fear or worry, is going to hold him back.
While the track was initially thought to be about Lil Nas X’s rapid ascent into stardom, on June 30, 2019—the last day of Pride Month—the singer tweeted that the true meaning behind the song’s lyrics has to do with his sexuality. Thus, with “C7osure (You Like),” Lil Nas X confirmed that he is part of the LGBTQA+ community.
