Taylor Swift To Receive NMPA Songwriter Icon Award

After a crazy year of surprise-dropping new music and releasing a re-recorded version of her 2009 album Fearless, Taylor Swift will be receiving the Songwriter Icon Award from the National Music Publishers’ Association.

According to the NMPA, President and CEO David Israelite praised Taylor Swift saying that no one is more deserving of the award than her. He said:

“She gave the world incredible songwriting when they needed it most and she continues to rewrite the rulebook when it comes to her career… Her advocacy has lifted the entire creative community, and she has done it at great cost and risk to her own career.”

Taylor Swift is a celebrity activist, advocating for artists to be paid fairly for music streamed on services like Apple Music and Spotify. Most recently, she has pushed for artists to be able to own their work and has even begun re-recording her own masters. Taylor currently holds 76 NMPA Songwriting Gold & Platinum Awards.

The NMPA announced Monday that Taylor Swift would be receiving this special honor at the association’s virtual Annual Meeting on June 9. Past recipients of this award include Ryan Tedder, Garth Brooks, Alicia Keys, and Pharrell Williams.

What is the NMPA?

The National Music Publishers’ Association represents American music publishers and their songwriting partners, working to protect its members’ property rights. The organization was founded in 1917 with the mission to secure and advance the interest of musical artists.

The NMPA states that it is “the voice of both small and large music publishers and is the leading advocate for publishers and their songwriter partners… [representing] its members in negotiations to shape the future of the music industry by fostering a business environment that furthers both creative and financial success.”

The NMPA’s 2021 Annual Meeting is also set to feature tributes from Luke Bryan, Sara Bareilles, and Priscilla Block.

Country Music Association CEO Sarah Trahern and New York Congressman Jerrold Nadler will also receive awards this year. Sarah Trahern will be honored with the NMPA Industry Legacy Award for her leadership and ability to be innovative and continue to modernize country music during these unprecedented times. The NMPA President’s Award will recognize Jerrold Nadler for his efforts to protect songwriters and music publishers and for pushing the Music Modernization Act through the House of Representatives.

Taylor Swift’s whirlwind year as a songwriter

Taylor Swift has been writing songs since she was a young girl. In a 2008 interview with The Washington Post, Taylor said she entered and won a poetry contest when she was 10 years old, which helped her discover her love for songwriting. She has been dazzling us with her ability to tell complete stories through her lyrics ever since.

As if the songs on Taylor Swift (2006) and Fearless (2008) weren’t impressive enough, Taylor Swift solidified her title of a songwriter when she released her third studio album Speak Now (2010), on which every song was written solely by her. Taylor has continued to write hits both for herself and other artists. She has written tracks like “This Is What You Came For” by Calvin Harris and Rihanna, “Better Man” by Little Big Town, and “Babe” by Sugarland.

During lockdown in 2020, Taylor Swift wrote not one, but two albums that arguably feature the best songwriting of her career. Songs like “betty” and “champagne problems” take listeners through the characters’ loves and losses, delivering distinct messages within the music. These albums brought her into the alternative genre while still containing pop and country influences, highlighting her versatility as a songwriter.
