For once, Kanye West is making headlines for something good with his plans to take sustainable fashion to a whole new level.
Kanye West is no stranger to celeb gossip. The celeb made entertainment news (and national news) headlines throughout 2020, including his response to fans concerned about his mental health, the announcement (and eventual concession) in the presidential race (which reportedly will not be his last attempt), a social media attack on his wife Kim Kardashian and mother-in-law Kris Jenner on social media, and too many other outrageous stories to count.
In an interview with Apple Music, the celeb describes how he’s building a fashion farm on his Wyoming property with the support of his Kardashian wife. West intends to use his farm to produce hydroponic cotton, wheat, and hemp. He calls it going from “seed to sew” – the textile equivalent of farm to table.
After just signing a multi-billion dollar Gap deal, West’s eco-friendly vision may single-handedly save the planet from its destruction at the hands of fashion.
Fast fashion is a destructive phenomena marked by society’s addiction to buying cheap, trendy clothing that drains resources and ends up in landfills due to its short lifespan. That’s why celebs like Bella Hadid choose to thrift instead of buy new clothing.
Fast fashion wastes consumers’ money, pollutes the environment and results in excessive amounts of waste.
West is interested in only natural materials, and is on the hunt to find alternatives to synthetics like nylon that are harmful for the earth.
His latest Yeezy shoe is made out of algae. His explanation for the incentive to source all-natural materials is, “God gives us everything we need.”
He goes on to explain why manufacturing locally is crucial for sustainability: “We’ve been stuck in a loop and we gotta break the loop.”
A Yeezy motorcycle boot was made in China and never made it to the states because of an issue with customs. This was the impetus for West to shift his focus to manufacturing entirely in the U.S.
He likes to see his prototypes come to life in person, before his eyes. “It’s really about control. We have to be in control of our own minds.”
