Ever since I can remember, my style has been defined by the mix of tough and pretty. I was the girl in high school wearing Bridget-Fonda-Singles-era combat boots with flouncy skirts and plaid shirts. So, these days, everyone around here knows I’m absolutely obsessed with leather jackets.
I love how a biker jacket can instantly toughen up a lace dress or add a little downtown cool to a pair of high-waisted pants (à la Givenchy). But, like a pair of good jeans, finding one that’ll stay in rotation season after season can be tricky.
you have to see it as an investment piece
Someone who’s mastered the look — and then some — is our friend, Anine Bing, the former Danish model turned designer of the most amazing leather jackets (Rosie Huntington-Whitely is a huge fan). “I like it simple but with an edge,” says Bing, whose daily uniform revolves around her biker jackets, usually paired with skinny jeans, a T-shirt, and studded boots.
“To me, it’s all about quality of the leather as well as the shape and fit of the jacket,” she says, adding that any body type can benefit from a fitted silhouette to define the waist.
And Bing urges, in this case, don’t be afraid to spend for quality and longevity. “It can be intimidating spending around $1,000 on one piece, but you have to see it as an investment piece that could be in your wardrobe for decades,” she says.
