Tutorial Tuesday: Creating a Buzzworthy Cut

Hair is the essence of self-expression. It can transform an entire look and also make a statement. But there is a notion that short hair means less options. I just see it as a challenge to be more creative. Granted, it can be a hunt to find the right stylists to execute the perfect color, cut and style.

High-contrast has been a growing theme for me in my work, wardrobe and make-up and I wanted to carry this over to my hair as well. For a while I have been thinking about getting some kind of design etched into my hair. Problem is, I have thin platinum strands which makes it tough for a cut-in design to be seen. The contrast isn’t bold enough.

Instead I came up with this vision of having bold lines cut into the back of my hair. I still wasn’t sure if this would work. And regardless of having had my fair share of bad cuts and dye jobs – I still go into things pretty fearless. I figure if all else fails, I’ll put a beanie over it.

For little over a year I have gotten my hair done at Self Salon in my Williamsburg neighborhood. Barbara Alcazar does my cut and Christina Hiatt does my color. I can go to them with anything and they will do their absolute best to achieve what I want. They are a dynamic duo.

It was during a recent appointment that I put these two to the test requesting a bleached out blonde hue and those designs I had been dreaming about. After Christina touched up my color making it the perfect platinum, Barbara sculpted three tiered lines into the back of my haircut. Let me just say, this sounds much easier than it is. Buzz cuts, fades, designs are jobs normally left to skilled barbers. But Barbara brought to life exactly what I had envisioned. That’s what great stylists do.

Check out Christina and Barbara at work – and how it all went down.
