Here’s something to look forward to this spring: the 90s hit animated Nickelodeon series Rugrats is making a comeback in 2021!
The all-new series will premiere on Paramount Plus and will apparently be voiced by select members of the original Rugrats cast “as they embark on a new batch of epic adventures!”
The re-imagining of the classic 90s series will feature CG-animated series versions of the classic Rugrats cast: E.G. Daily (Tommy), Nancy Cartwright (Chuckie), Cheryl Chase (Angelica), Cree Summer (Susie), and Kath Soucie (The Rugrats twins – Phil and Lil), all of whom are reprising their iconic roles in this new series.
“Rugrats is one of the most iconic cartoons recognized by fans around the globe, and this original version is one we are taking great care and pride in creating for a brand-new audience,” said Ramsey Naito, President, Nickelodeon Animation, in a statement. “Having the voice cast behind these special characters come together is one of the essential pieces to making the show recognizable and we can’t wait to watch this talented group bring them to life again.”

How much do you remember about the original Rugrats?
The original Rugrats series launched in August of 1991 and instantly became a groundbreaking phenomenon, cementing its place in pop culture history through its iconic characters, storytelling, and unique visual style. Rugrats was in production for nine seasons over the course of 13 years and all seasons are available to watch on Hulu. The series earned four Daytime Emmy Awards, six Kids’ Choice Awards, and its very own star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
As a 90s baby myself, the announcement of the reboot tugged at my millennial heartstrings. Rugrats was my favorite Nickelodeon show––I talked about the significance of the Hanukkah episode in an article last year––and Cynthia’s workout song immediately popped into my head as soon as I watched the trailer for the new version.
