This is THE VOICE! With today’s announcement that Green Day frontman Billie Joe Armstrong will join The Voice, it appears that the coaching roster for Season 3 of NBC’s hit singing slugfest is finally set — and just in time, as the series is wrapping up the shooting of its pre-taped audition and battle round portions.
Armstrong will join Team Christina Aguilera as a mentor for the pop star’s 16 aspiring artists, who will sing to the death (more or less) during the show’s signature battle rounds. Armstrong will aid Aguilera in coaching her team through the battles, just as Mary J. Blige, Michael Buble and Rob Thomas will assist coaches Adam Levine, Blake Shelton and Cee Lo Green, respectively.
In a statement, Armstrong praised the show because “it’s not molding artists, it’s just giving them a little bit of guidance and direction without giving them a complete makeover.”
Last season, each coach had two helping hands in the form of celebrity advisors, but this year, the show’s host Carson Daly tells Hollywood.com that among the tweaks in store for Season 3 is the reduction of the mentors from two to one.
The third season of The Voice returns September 10 on ABC.
