Rebels, Jedis and Sith Lords, get ready…to wait a little bit longer for the live-action Star Wars TV show that George Lucas has been promising us. The good news is that he’s got 50 hours — or two seasons — worth of the series ready to go. The bad (or maybe not-so-bad) news is that it will have to wait for a “technological breakthrough” before Lucas can begin shooting it.
The series, which is set between Revenge of the Sith and A New Hope, was promised to be made at one tenth of the cost of the films, and that’s why Lucas is waiting to pull the trigger. The technology needed to create the television series at a low enough price point isn’t there yet and he tells G4TV that developing this technology is “just a very, very difficult process.” Now, Lucas didn’t give as any clue as to what this mystery technology is or what it does or how far away we might be from its genesis, we just know that it’s super, super important.
Now, I’m as much of a Star Wars fan as the next nerd-girl, but I don’t know if I trust ol’ George on this one. It’s a mysterious technology that’s keeping his show that, honestly, doesn’t really need to happen — aren’t three extra, not-so-great prequels enough? — at bay, but he can’t even tell us what it is? Come on, George. Just chuck this one into the pile where you left that Christmas Special (and where Jar Jar and the midi-chlorian theory should have landed) and call it a day.
