NBC’s Grimm isn’t exactly the first series viewers run to for a dose of reality, but when Hollywood.com spoke with one of the stars of the supernatural series, Silas Weir Mitchell (fan favorite Monroe), Grimm’s ability to capture reality is exactly what he was raving about.
“It has to do with mythology and psychology. These creatures are mythologizing human behavior,” said Mitchell, promoting the Blu-ray release of Grimm’s first season. He points out that many of the Wesen (supernatural beings, to the casual viewer) are expressions of different personality types, from the snake-like Lausenschlange to the mousy mauzenhertz. “All these different psychological types exist in the world.”
Of course, Grimm isn’t a fluffy little tale about creatures that resemble people’s strongest traits. More often than not, the Wesen Nick encounters (including Blutebaden like Monroe) are committing some act of evil, something that Mitchell says ties the series to our everyday reality. “Look at this guy who just shot all these people in this Sikh temple, look at the local news. The world is populated by creatures doing crappy creature stuff. All Grimm does is close it in a mythology, but it’s already real and it’s already there,” he says.
As for the second season, which premieres August 13 on NBC, Mitchell remains pretty mum. He does, however, have a solid pitch for prospective viewers: “It’s a mystery that we’ve never seen before — it’s a world we don’t actually already know,” he says. In a TV world filled with supernatural creatures like werewolves and vampires, whose mythology we’ve known since our 10th grade teachers made us read Dracula, Mitchell says Grimm’s mythology is unique. “People have never heard of a hexenbiest. People have never heard of a mauzhertz, or a lausenschalnge, or a blutbad. And that’s exciting,” he beams.
Grimm Season 1 is available on Blu-ray now, and Season 2 begins Aug. 13 at 10 PM ET on NBC.
