HBO Picks Up Political Comedy ‘Veep’ With Julia Louis-Dreyfus

Hollywood.comBecause the question “what would happen if you re-shot Commander in Chief with Julia Louis-Dreyfus and more cursing?” needed desperately to be answered, HBO has decided to pick up Veep, a D.C.-set comedy pilot about the first female Vice President of the United States.  British comedian and political satirist Armando Iannucci is set to write and direct the pilot, and Julia Louis-Dreyfus, fresh off of The New Adventures of Old Christine, is in talks to star.

The newly greenly Veep will center on fictional former Senator Selina Meyer (Louis-Dreyfus) who finds out the hard way that being the President’s second-in-command isn’t all it’s cracked up to be.  It is, according to Deadline, “nothing like she expected and everything everyone ever warned [her] about.”

Although D.C.-based shows have been a hard sell in the past, 2010 could be the perfect year for a series about a female VP, what with Hilary Clinton expected to step in for Joe Biden in 2012 and the memory of the Palin Vice Presidency-that-could-have-been still fresh in our minds.

Co-writer Armando Iannucci will be joined by Simon Blackwell, who also worked with Iannucci on the Oscar-nominated political satire In the Loop, along with executive producers Chris Godsick and New York Times columnist Frank Rich.
