HBO Releases Promo Photos for GoT, But Where Are Jon and Stannis?

Right now, Game of Thrones fans are dreaming of spring and counting down the days until the season six premiere.

HBO recently released a series of promotional photos for the upcoming season six of Game of Thrones. The pics reveal a lot of juicy details including a blind Arya (Maisie Williams), a potentially pregnant Sansa (Sophie Turner), and a Tyrion (Peter Dinklage) who’s actually pouring out a glass of wine.

However, the photos are more interesting for what they don’t show. Where are Jon Snow (Kit Harington) and Stannis Baratheon (Stephen Dillane)? The network released a photo of Myrcella Baratheon-Lannister-Martell’s body (complete with a gold shroud) so they obviously don’t have a problem showcasing dead bodies. If anything, an image of Jon chillin’ on a funeral pyre would help with their “Jon is dead” campaign. So why no Jon or Stannis? Because they’re both still alive.

There’s a rule of thumb amongst Game of Thrones fans. Basically if you don’t actually see a character die, that means they’re probably not dead. We’ve seen this time and again with characters like Arya, Davos, and Tyrion. The show and the books have a history of “fake out deaths” which has lead fans to be skeptical of any death that occurs off screen.

On the left hand side of the photo of Melisandre (Carice Van Houten), some fans are arguing that you can spot the silver pommel of Jon’s valyrian steel sword, Longclaw. So even if Jon is actually dead, he’s likely to be resurrected quickly, before a funeral can take place.

As for Stannis, in one of George R.R. Martin‘s end of year blog posts, he discussed characters that were dead in the show, but alive in the books, specifically mentioning “King Stannis.” The use of the title “King” has implied to fans that Stannis is finished being a king, but not necessarily dead.

The HBO store also features an “In Memoriam” section which features the Pop Vinyl figurines for deceased characters like Tywin Lannister, Ygritte, and Khal Drogo. Missing from this section? Jon Snow and Stannis Baratheon.

Game of Thrones returns April 24th.
