James Franco and Aaron Paul Lead Hulu’s Best New Original Shows for 2016

In recent years, Netflix has earned critical acclaim for its original programming (like House of Cards and its spin-off Fuller House). With Netflix poised to have another standout year, other online streaming services (like Hulu and Amazon) have been forced to respond. Hulu has been producing shows for years, but in light of Netflix’s success, they’ve doubled down on their commitment to original programming, starting with some promising dramas.

The eight episode mini-series based on Stephen King‘s novel of the same name debuted February 15th. Produced by J.J. Abrams, the show follows Jake Epping (James Franco), a divorced English teacher who travels back in time to the 1960s to prevent the assassination of President John F. Kennedy. However, Epping’s mission is complicated by the past itself, which doesn’t want to be changed.

The Path (originally called The Way) stars Aaron Paul and Michelle Monaghan as Eddie and Sarah Cleary, a family at the center of a controversial religious organization. The mystery-thriller explores relationships, faith, and power as the Clearys navigate the fine line between the life they want and the life they lead. In 2015, Hulu ordered a 10 episode series, set to premiere in March.

Chance

Chance (based on a series of books by Kem Nunn) stars Hugh Laurie as Eldon Chance, a San Francisco-based forensic neuropsychiatrist, who gets wrapped up in the city’s seedy underbelly. Against his own wishes, Chance spirals into a world of police corruption and mental illness. The show was already been ordered for 2 ten-episode seasons.

Shut Eye
Release Date: TBD

Shut Eye explores the seedy underground of Los Angeles’ psychic crime organization. The 10 episode series will star Jeffrey Donovan as Charlie Haverford, a failed magician turned psychic. Haverford’s whole world view starts to change when he begins to experience real visions.
