Mr. Smithers Will Finally Come Out of the Closet on ‘The Simpsons’

Mr. Smithers’ sexuality has been an open secret for years, but in a recent interview The Simpsons executive producer Al Jean announced that Mr. Smithers will officially come out to Mr. Burns and the rest of Springfield in the upcoming season of the show.

“In Springfield now, most people know he’s gay, but obviously Burns doesn’t,” Jean told TVLine, “We deal with that in two episodes. … We actually do a lot with Smithers this year; he gets fed up with Burns not appreciating him and considers his options.”

The show has dealt with LGBT issues before including the season eight episode “Homer’s Phobia” which won a GLAAD Media Award for its depiction of Homer’s prejudices, but this will be the first time Mr. Smithers’ sexuality has been tackled head on.

What do you think of Mr. Smithers coming out? Hopefully this means love is in store for our favorite nuclear power plant employee (sorry Carl).
