MTV and VH-1 are finally getting some competition.
A band of music industry and TV executives is planning to launch a new music video TV network called Studio M on New Year’s Day in an attempt to play the music game amid MTV’s dominance, Daily Variety reports.
Studio M is aiming to attract viewers seeking personality-based programs and a wider scope than current offerings from Viacom’s MTV, VH-1 and M2. The long-term goal is to expand to 24-hour operation and reach 90 percent of U.S. homes.
The network, which had a small launch on Dec. 11, operates a studio in Sherman Oaks, Calif., and in Newark, N.J. Studio M has been picked up by eight full-power stations and more than 130 affiliates of America One and American Independent Network.
