Apparently when you’re Ryan Murphy — one of the most hard working and successful showrunners in the industry — all you have to do is just pick up the phone and poof! The nearly impossible is now possible.
Murphy recently reached out to Yoko Ono, infamously know as wife of the late John Lennon, to ask her permission for a very special scene in the season finale of The New Normal — and she said yes! Hollywood.com was in the audience at The New Normal’s PaleyFest Q&A panel Wednesday night when Muphy shared the heartwarming story to fan-filled theater.

When asked about the show’s season finale, Murphy revealed that the epsidoe will feature a very unique premise. “I wanted to do something different with it, I wanted to do something different cinematically and [co-creator] Ali [Adler] and I had and idea where we thought, ‘Wouldn’t it be great to have an entire act that didn’t have any words?’ So we really plotted this out,” he says.
The two creators decided that one very special song would guide the audience through the silent scene. Murphy explains, “Ali’s favorite song and one of my favorite songs is a song called “Beautiful Boy” by John Lennon, so we reached out to Yoko Ono to get permission to use that song for an entire act with no [words] and she said yes so we are thankful to Yoko.”

Murphy admits that this is one of the most touching scenes he’s ever helped to create, saying, “It’s fun and it’s really different and cool and it’s heartwarming to hear.” Adler adds, “It’s really special and important episode… The marriage and the baby don’t happen in the way that you think they’re going to.”
With only four episodes left to air in the season, Murphy gives a rundown of everything fans can look forward to. “The end of this season we’re building towards David and Brian getting married and we’re building towards a baby being born.” The showrunner continues, “We’re building towards [Goldie] really deciding whether she’s going to get back together with Clay or continuing on this independent path that she has created. And Nene just becoming the queen of the world.”
