Ryan Seacrest Brewing an ‘Idol’ Competitor

Ryan Seacrest American Idol RivalThe man who does everything is about to add one more item to his to-do list. Ryan Seacrest is in talks with NBC to create a musically-inclined rival to the reigning singing competition, but it would be totally different from American Idol, guys. NBC’s Paul Telegdy tells the New York Post, “It is self-contained episodes. It is a bit more fun. It’s not contestant competitive. It’s artist competitive.” Sounds super different.

That’s about all we know about the show for the moment, but this news does make us wonder what will become of Idol once Seacrest’s rival project gets going. It’s still early, so we probably won’t see anything about the program until 2012. The big factor here is Seacrest’s contract with 19 Entertainment, the company behind Idol. He’s got one year left on Idol and should he choose to leave to take care of his NBC show, the Fox darling could take a real hit. He and Randy Jackson are the only components left from the original show and as annoying as Seacrest can be sometimes, the show just wouldn’t be the same without him. Then again, that’s what we said about Simon Cowell when he left to do X Factor.

Either way, Seacrest is still around this season and next season, and who knows if the show will really keep up steam longer than that. Idol fans can rest easy for the moment, but with so many new big-budget singing competitions cropping up the potential loss may not be so bad.
