See How the Characters of ‘The Vampire Diaries’ Evolved In 7 Seasons

A lot has happened to the characters on The Vampire Diaries since the series began seven seasons ago. There have been romances, betrayals and more deaths than anyone could have ever imagined. Though the casts themselves haven’t aged a day (which is probably a good thing considering the fact that the majority of them play vampires on the show), the citizens of Mystic Falls have certainly been to hell and back. The seventh season of TVD should bring entirely new story-lines since Nina Dobrev, who played both Elena Gilbert and Katherine Pierce exited the series. See the characters of The Vampire Diaries then and now.

Paul Wesley - Stefan Salvatore

Stefan has had a rough couple of years that's for sure. First Elena left him for his brother Damon, igniting the same rivalry that he and Damon had when they were dealing with Katherine Pierce hundreds of years ago. If that wasn't bad enough, Stefan then turned off his humanity and was incapacitated by Silas. With Elena gone, perhaps Stefan can finally find happiness with Caroline.
Ian Somerhalder - Damon Salvatore

The CW
When we first met Damon in season one of The Vampire Diaries, he was the quintessential bad boy. He was as naughty as possible, and even used poor Caroline as his own personal blood bag. Despite all of this, he enraptured us (and Elena) with his dreamy baby blues. Though Damon finally got the relationship that he so desperately desired with Elena, it was ultimately short-lived. With Elena in her sleep spell, it looks like Damon will continue on with the healthy relationship he formed with Bonnie, (even it is is a little weird considering the fact that she was Elena's BFF).
Candice Accola - Caroline Forbes

Remember when Caroline was an obnoxious needy cheerleader who thought the world revolved around her? Luckily a lot has changed since season one of TVD. By the second season, Ms. Forbes became a vampire, and she's been pretty badass since then. From her cat and mouse game with Klaus, to turning off her humanity, Caroline has had it pretty rough as of late. Now that Elena and her mother are gone, let's see if Caroline and Stefan will have a chance to see where their newly kindled relationship can go.

Kat Graham - Bonnie Bennett
Kat Graham, The Vampire Diaries, The CW, 102015
The CW
Bonnie was super wary of the Salvatore brothers during the first season of TVD. She was definitely right to be suspicious, because Mystic Falls has not been the same since Stefan and Damon returned.  Bonnie certainly hasn't had it easy. After discovering she was a witch (who are known enemies of vampires), Bonnie died, became ghost, was resurrected and then she was trapped in a hell with that evil witch Kai. Luckily, Bonnie is free now and hopefully up for some Damon lovin'.
Zach Roerig - Matt Donovan
Zach Roerig, The Vampire Diaries,The CW, 102015
The CW
It would be easy to think that Matt was a terrible person after his grand speech in season six about his disdain for vampires. However, considering the fact that Elena left him for Stefan, his sister Vicki was killed, he and Caroline didn't work out, Rebekah left him, and he was killed numerous times by supernatural creatures it's understandable that Matt has had more than enough. It wouldn't be surprising if Matt became a full fledged villain in the near future.
Matthew Davis - Alaric Saltzman
Matthew Davis, The Vampire Diaries, The-CW-102015
The CW
Poor Alaric, he came to mystic Falls to try and find out what happened to his wife and he got way more than he bargained for. After finding out that his wife left him to willingly become a vampire, Alaric also became a vampire, then a ghost and finally he was resurrected from the dead. Despite going through all of this, all seems well at present for Alaric, but knowing TVD anything can happen.

Michael Trevino - Tyler Lockwood
Michael Trevino, The Vampire Diaries, The CW, 102015
The CW
You might not recall, but Tyler was the Lord of Buttheads in season one of The Vampire Diaries. However, it turns out though that he wasn’t just another frat boy in the making, he was actually a werewolf who was having trouble tampering down his emotions. After being turned into a hybrid Vampire-Werewolf, having Klaus after him, being killed and then resurrected again, it's no wonder that Tyler chose to leave Mystic Falls behind in search of a calmer existence.
Steven R. McQueen - Jeremy Gilbert
Steven R McQueen, The Vampire Diaries, The CW, 102015
The CW
It seems just like yesterday when Jeremy was just Elena's annoying little brother, cutting class and smoking weed. Luckily, the youngest Gilbert grew up a bunch. Not only did he straighten out his act, he's been killed and brought back to life a bazillion times. Never a fan of vampires to begin with, Jeremy learned that he was a skilled vampire hunter. Though he told everyone in Mystic Falls that he was moving on with his life by moving to Santa Fe, in reality, he' honing his vamp hunting skills.
Nina Dobrev - Elena Gilbert
Nina Dobrev, The Vampire Diaries, The CW, 102015
The CW
It was a long and twisty road for Elena Gilbert from season one to season six. Still reeling from her parents' deaths, Elena met Stefan whom she quickly discovered was a vampire. Though she avoided becoming a vamp herself for several seasons, Elena was eventually turned in season three of TVD. Let's not even get into her relationship with Damon and watching nearly all of her friends and family die or fall apart in some way. Though Elena isn't technically dead, she sacrificed herself with a very long sleep spell to save her BFF Bonnie.
