Despite the legions of fanboys and fangirls waiting in fitful anticipation of the Rally To Keep Fear Alive/Rally To Restore Sanity this Saturday, it seems that there weren’t too many folks tuned into their televisions to actually watch the big event.
There were 200,000 rational people joining in the celebration of sanity in Washington, D.C. with Jon Stewart, Stephen Colbert, and friends, but only two million people tuned in on their televisions for the incredibly reasonable afternoon. While compared to 200,000, two million seems like a great improvement but in the world of television ratings, it’s pretty damn dismal. But why, oh why, did the viewership that cried out for this rally shirk their viewing duties and cause these droopy ratings?
I guess that’s what you get when your audience is all “stoned slackers watching your dopey show every night.” Maybe everyone was too stoned to watch? Or we can blame the damn hipsters, right? They’re just all talk and no action in their American Apparel hoodies and ironic sunglasses. Or maybe, just maybe it was due to the fact that it was a Saturday on Halloween weekend during college football season and people who love Stewart and Colbert also love the internet and thus decided to go about their weekendy, ghoulish, candy-ridden business and caught up with onslaught of rally coverage and video on the interwebs. I know that’s not an ideal situation for Comedy Central, but I doubt the rally went unnoticed. Let’s count up how many stoned slackers have been watching the videos on Comedy Central’s website before we start freaking out and assuming that no one cared. Remember, this whole point was to be rational and sane? Let’s stick with that idea, okay?
