Well it looks like Bart Simpson will get to be 10 years old for another year. The longest running prime-time entertainment show (either drama or comedy) and the longest running animated program has been renewed for another season, bringing The Simpons total to 23 seasons. The series will also cross the huge milestone of 500 episodes during the next season. Many shorts will be eaten.
Arguments of the show’s relevance and comedic worth are worthless at this point. The show is still pretty funny, but of course it’s not as funny as it was during the fabled early years. That happens, the fans grow up, sense of humors change, culture and society grow. We’re not the same people as we were when The Simpsons started. The writing and the world of television is different; it’s a whole different ball game. It’s still a pretty damn funny show and it’s more than earned its rightful place as being the longest running prime time show as either an animated, drama, or comedy.
And because I don’t really watch the show (strangely it was the one show I was forbidden to watch as a child), I asked a friend who is a fan of the show what he thought. Will Fonvielle had this to say:
“Donuts, is there anything they can’t do? It makes no difference at all. It’s become like SNL, an institution, you either watch or don’t at your own leisure. I don’t watch it anymore. The legacy has long been set. Another bad season won’t harm anything. In America: first you get the sugar, then you get the power, then you get the women.”
