After being ousted from the zombie apocalypse, you might think that Frank Darabont would be a lost soul these days. But the former Walking Dead showrunner is finding solace in the crime-ridden streets of 1940s Los Angeles, as we all have at one point or another. Darabont is teaming with TNT to develop the pilot for L.A. Noir, series based on John Burtin’s book (and not the video game).
The creative genius—creator of The Walking Dead, writer/director of The Shawshank Redemption and The Green Mile, and self-portrayer on that one episode of Entourage—is signed on to write and direct the L.A. Noir pilot. The story will center around the corruption in Los Angeles’ police department and the local crime syndicates. Mickey Cohen, the main character of the upcoming feature film Gangster Squad, starring Sean Penn, will be a pivotal character in the series.
Darabont’s leave from The Walking Dead remains a bit nebulous, but had to do with the creator’s refusal to make the artistic compromises requested by the AMC network for financial reasons. Hopefully, Darabont will have a freer range of creative control on L.A. Noir (although The Walking Dead has, admittedly, fended quite well even in his absence).
